An astonishing work of cutting-edge science and cultural history that radically reframes how we understand the vagina - and consequently, how we understand women - from one of our most respected cultural critics and thinkers, Naomi Wolf, author of the modern classic The Beauty Myth. When an unexpected medical crisis sends Naomi Wolf on a deeply personal journey to tease out the intersections between sexuality and creativity, she discovers, much to her own astonishment, an increasing body of scientific evidence that suggests that the vagina is not merely flesh, but an intrinsic component of the female brain - and thus has a fundamental connection to female consciousness itself. Utterly enthralling and totally fascinating, Vagina: A New Biography draws on this set of insights about ´´the mind-vagina connection´´ to reveal new information about what women really need, and considers what a sexual relationship - and a relationship to the self - transformed by these insights could look like. Exhilarating and groundbreaking, Vagina: A New Biography combines rigorous science, explained for lay listeners, with cultural history and deeply personal considerations of the role of female desire in female identity, creativity, and confidence, from interviewees of all walks of life. Heralded by Publishers Weekly as one of the best science books of the year, it is a provocative and deeply engaging book that elucidates the ties between a woman´s experience of her vagina and her sense of self; her impulses, dreams, and courage; and her role in love and in society in completely new and revelatory ways sure to provoke impassioned conversation. A brilliant and nuanced synthesis of physiology, history, and cultural criticism, Vagina: A New Biography explores the physical, political, and spiritual implications of this startling series of new scientific breakthroughs for women and for society as a whole, from a write... 1. From South Park to Kathy Acker, and from Lars Von Trier to Sex and the City, women´s sexual organs are demonized. Rees traces the fascinating evolution of this demonization, considering how calling the ´´c-word´´ obscene both legitimates and perpetuates the fractured identities of women globally. Rees demonstrates how writers, artists, and filmmakers contend with the dilemma of the vagina´s puzzlingly ´´covert visibility´´. In our postmodern, porn-obsessed culture, vaginas appear to be everywhere, literally or symbolically but, crucially, they are as silenced as they are objectified. The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History examines the paradox of female genitalia through five fields of artistic expression: literature, film, TV, visual, and performance art. There is a peculiar paradox - unlike any other - regarding female genitalia. Rees focuses on this paradox of what is termed the ´´covert visibility´´ of the vagina and on its monstrous manifestations. That is, what happens when the female body refuses to be pathologized, eroticized, or rendered subordinate to the will or intention of another? Common, and often offensive, slang terms for the vagina can be seen as an attempt to divert attention away from the reality of women´s lived sexual experiences such that we don´t ´´look´´ at the vagina itself - slang offers a convenient distraction to something so taboo. The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History is an important contribution to the ongoing debate in understanding the feminine identity. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Polly Lee. Content in this book was banned from a college classroom that studied The Vagina Monologues. After reading Eve Ensler´s book and attending a local production of her play, author Joe DiBuduo wanted to respond with his distinctly creative, male point of view. DiBuduo planned to write a play or screenplay titled The Penis Chronicles. After handing out a questionnaire to a multitude of people who said they would participate, Joe received only one response. The Penis Chronicles couldn´t be written with only his and another man´s thoughts. Realizing how reticent most men and even his college instructor were to talk about penises, DiBuduo felt obligated to research and share his narrative about the male appendage. He ended up with one monologue - A Penis Manologue. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ian Temple. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/033270/bk_acx0_033270_sample.mp3.
